The 80-mile stretch of Yucatán peninsula coastline, which meanders through Tulum and to the Punta Allen peninsula, is known as the Riviera Maya. The ancient ruins of Mayan civilizations and the biosphere reserve of Sian Ka'an are the main attractions in the region. Scuba divers will find abundant sites to explore, including the cavern Cenote Dos Ojo, Mesoamerican reefs, and the Puerto Morelos reef. The coral aquarium, deer refuge and a jaguar exhibit at Xcaret Eco-archeological Park are the major family attractions here.
You'll also want to see the nature park of Xplor featuring caverns, grottos and limestone caves. If nature tours fancy you, then a zip-line eco-tour in the LabnaHa Eco Park or Xplor Nature Park is highly recommended.
A number of all-inclusive resorts are found in Playa del Carmen and Cancun, along the Rivera Maya. Most of the five-star resorts offer private beach admission and quick access to the La Quinta Avenida, a lively shopping and dining hub in this region. The nearest airport to Rivera Maya is the Cancun Airport (CUN), which receives flights from major cities around the world. Renting a car is the easiest way to explore, but collective vans and luxury buses, are other modes of transportation in this region.
The driest season in Riviera Maya is from March through May, but more comfortable temperatures are enjoyed in the fall and winter.
