The Washington and Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park trail runs through downtown, providing ample opportunities for biking and running. In addition, the city--a western suburb of Washington, DC--is home to the unique Herndon Train Depot Museum and Visitors Center, where tourists can browse railroad memorabilia and receive information on the town. Herndon is also just six miles from the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, a Smithsonian facility that contains two huge hangars, one of which contains the space shuttle Discovery.
Herndon is less than three miles from Dulles International Airport (IAD) and most Herndon hotels offer complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport. Herndon is well connected by road to Washington, DC and the surrounding region via Route 267. Alternatively, the Fairfax Connector provides bus service from a Herndon Park and Ride lot to the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority's West Falls Church train station. From this station, visitors can travel via Metro into Washington, DC.
Herndon houses more than 150 dining options, ranging from local establishments to well-known chain restaurants. Nightlife offerings include movie theaters, bars and the NextStop Theatre Company, a non-profit professional theater troupe that hosts various events, programs and performances throughout the year.
