We arrived at the house on Thursday and the pool was absolutely filthy (to the point where the bottom of the pool was yellow and filled with leaves/dirt), was ice cold, and the pool furniture was strewn about all over the place.. The pool guy showed up on Friday morning (a day after our Thursday check-in) to clean the pool and realized that the pool heater was out of gas/propane. The gas/propane delivery did not happen until Friday afternoon and therefore the pool was not usable until Saturday. Additionally, there were dirty gym socks on the day bed in the master bedroom, the refrigerator was filled with old food, and the master bathroom is actually filled with the owners clothes/stuff and doesn't look anything like it does in the photos.
Additionally around an hour after leaving the house, the owner called me yelling and cussing profusely and saying that we were disrespectful and left the house in terrible condition (which wasn't true), not letting me get a word in edgewise. The owner then made claims against us that included, "leaving a bowl of dog food out and moving living room furniture around" that he felt justified holding a portion our deposit back. He also claimed that we broke the agreement because more than 8 people stayed in the home, when he agreed that 10 people could stay in the house via Homeaway's messaging platform.
Unfortunately Homeaway has no protection for the renter in this situation and the home owner doesn't need to provide any justification for the amount of the deposit they are holding.
The condition of the pool house along with the attitude of the home owner made this a pretty bad experience - I definitely would not rent this property or any property owned by this home owner again.
