"this used to be the most affordable spot in town, no real frills other than its close proximity to “the strip” and decent gaming on the casino level. for the past 10 years this has been our spot for cheap rooms that averaged around $29-$50 a night. the hotel seemed relatively clean and we were happy. Now, ever since covid really, this place has just become downright creepy. Reno has always been a hotspot for tweakers and homeless folks, but the situation has really seemed to spiral since lockdowns began. The cheapest rooms we were able to book last week were $45 hotel tax resort fee—grand total $75. the room we were put in was dirty, one very thin blanket, dirty curtains, the halls smelt of weed, screaming coming from adjacent rooms. I don’t know what happened but the price has gone waaay up and the atmosphere seems to have taken a huge hit. granted they are upgrading some things and have renovated one of the hotel towers, but they wanted another $40 for the upgrade to the new tower. we passed. the head of security was a grimacing overweight guy in his 30’s wearing a dirty “illuminati” mask; eyeball in pyramid; looked like something out of the movie idiocracy—sloppy, rude, dirty clothes—just a complete “derp”. that said, the telephone operator and the lady at registration were very nice. the staff at mel’s cafe, downstairs, are a bit rough but generally nice and accommodating. while some parts of reno appear to be coming back to life, the meth zombies seem to be multiplying."
