Hotels in Del Mar
Del Mar, California, is an upscale town on the Pacific coast, north of San Diego. It offers outdoor activities, many choices of hotel, and easy proximity to the city attractions of San Diego. Its quaint Tudor-style downtown on Highway 101, a main coastal thoroughfare, is packed with unique cafes and boutique shopping. Del Mar is probably most famous for its racetrack, where horse lovers can see world-class Thoroughbred racing several times per year.
Del Mar is a short drive up Interstate 5 from San Diego International Airport (SAN). While most people travel the metro area by car, train travel is available on a commuter line, and a public bus system traverses Hwy 101. Del Mar offers some of the finest beaches in the United States for surfing. Pet lovers enjoy Dog Beach, a special spot where dogs can frolic off-leash in the waves. Boating and bicycling are also popular there, and bike lanes are abundant on Hwy 101.
Hints and Tips
Dress is casual, and the beach vibe extends to most locations in Del Mar. There are, however, several formal restaurants in town, where dinner dress is appropriate. Weather in Del Mar is mostly pleasant, roughly 60-80 degrees, but it can be cool on the shore at night. The months of December through February can be colder, with a bit of rain, while there is usually a hot spell in September, when temperatures can soar into triple digits.
