Cheap flights from Washington DC to San Francisco

Flying across the country to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is a long journey, but the atmosphere of this urban gateway to Northern California makes the trip well worth it. San Francisco is one of America’s most beautiful cities, and it’s definitely worth exploring. Starting at Union Square and working out to Marin and points beyond, the Bay Area tells a story unlike anywhere else in the United States.

Key Facts

The easiest way to get around the San Francisco area is by car, and the airport has an array of options to choose from for car rental. Once you’re on the road, Highway 101 north will take you into the city. The highway turns into Van Ness Avenue for a couple of miles in central San Francisco, but if you follow the signs you can take 101 all the way across the Golden Gate Bridge, and into fantastic Marin County. The marina in the city of Marin has some of the best crab legs on the West Coast, and the local beaches are secluded and quite beautiful.

Hints and Tips

The plane trip from Washington Dulles International (IAD) to SFO takes about five hours if you fly direct. From San Francisco you can easily travel by car to Santa Cruz, Napa Valley, Oakland, and Silicon Valley. Free parking around SFO is hard to find, but street side parking is widely available on Market Street in San Francisco, and from there you can easily catch a cable car up into the more walkable areas of the city.
