An Entertainment Family

Born May 16, 1966, Janet Jackson was the youngest member of one of the most influential families in the music industry. The Jackson family is well regarded for their musical talent, but while Janet's brothers were performing in the hit band the Jackson Five, Janet had aspirations of becoming an entertainment lawyer. Janet Jackson's autobiography outlined the pressures she experienced growing up in an entertainment family. She first ventured into the industry with an acting gig on the family variety show The Jacksons, but the sitcom Good Times was her first breakout role. She would continue starring in sitcoms over the course of the next few years.

Transition to Music

Janet would make her first foray into music at the age of 16 with the release of a self-titled album. Produced by legendary singer-songwriter Angela Winbush, who also worked with The Isley Brothers and Stevie Wonder, as well as by her father, her album was a hit right out of the gates, earning a legion of Janet Jackson fans that would continue to support her throughout her career. Despite receiving little promotion, this album peaked at 63 on the Billboard 200.

Since her first release in the 1980s, Janet Jackson's background has been one marked by success. She has released 11 studio albums and embarked on eight concert tours, and she is regarded as one of the most influential pop and R&B musicians alive. Her legacy has carried on to the next generation as well. Major stars like Beyonce Knowles, Toni Braxton and Britney Spears are all Janet Jackson fans and have declared her as one of their greatest influences. Her extensive catalog pulls influences from pop, R&B, funk, dance and hip-hop to produce a unique sound that few artists can replicate.
