Early Life and Career

Born on April 15, 1978 in Staffordsville, Kentucky, singer Chris Stapleton was raised by his coal mining father and healthcare worker mother. He opted to pursue sports instead of music throughout much of his childhood, although this would later change. His attention shifted to country and bluegrass music, and after only a year at Vanderbilt University where he was studying engineering, he opted to drop out to pursue his passion. He made the move to the Music City - Nashville, Tennessee - in 2001 at the age of 23, keen to hit it big on the country music scene.

A Talented Songwriter

Stapleton's extensive music career began out of the spotlight. He started out as a songwriter, signing a publishing deal with Sea Gayle Music not long after his arrival in Nashville. He then formed the bluegrass group the SteelDrivers in 2008. The band focused on a progressive bluegrass sound, amassing a small but loyal following. The band played routinely throughout Nashville, and cheap tickets were easy to secure. Stapleton continued to split his time between his band commitments and song-writing, penning hits for big time stars such as Kenny ChesneyTim McGrawLuke Bryan and even Adele. Four of the songs that he wrote for the likes of George StraitDarius Rucker and Josh Turner hit the No. 1 spot. The SteelDrivers were nominated for three Grammy Awards, but Stapleton ultimately opted to leave the band in the spring of 2010, later forming southern rock band The Jompson Brothers. The endeavor was again short lived and by October 2013 he had gone solo, releasing his first commercial single "What Are You Listening To?"

More Awards and Accolades

Stapleton did not become a hit until 2015 when he released his debut album Traveller. The offering received widespread critical acclaim, earning Stapleton an array of Country Music Awards and a loyal following. Stapleton's fans became eager to score cheap tickets to his shows, and by the December of 2015 Stapleton had cleaned up at the awards ceremony. He picked up three awards and a new-found position as one of country music's rising stars. His album Traveller soon shot to the No.1 spot on the country music chart, and he received additional award recognition - picking up four Grammy Award nominations.
