Known as Utah's Dixie, St. George is a thriving city that is one of the area's most picturesque. The red rocks found throughout the city give it a distinct look. Mormon history plays an important role in the life of the city, and visitors can tour the grounds of the St. George Temple and learn more about the church in the St. George Temple Visitor's Center. The Brigham Young Winter Home Historical Site and the St. George Tabernacle are other top religious sites that are open to the public. The Coyote Gulch Art Village is a collection of eclectic galleries that showcase southwestern and Native American art.
Visitors to the area can travel to several United States national parks that are located nearby. Zion's National Park is less than an hour to the north of St. George. Canyonlands and Arches are both a few hours to the north of the city. The closest major airport to St George is Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport (LAS), which is located about 130 miles away.
St. George was founded in 1861 by Mormon pioneers who were called by President Brigham Young to settle in the area. Today, the Mormon Tabernacle hosts a regular series of concerts for the public.
