Cedar City is a community in Iron County, which lies on the southwestern border of Utah. Located approximately 20 miles north of the Mojave Desert, the natural environment of the area offers many recreational opportunities. Parowan Gap provides the chance to see evidence of prehistoric civilizations in the form of Indian petroglyphs painted on rock faces. Rockport State Park contains a reservoir that encourages year-round boating, fishing and swimming. Enjoy a concert at the Cedar Breaks National Monument amphitheater. This scenic venue is surrounded by an array of colorful ridges, spires and sandstone columns.
Cedar City offers buses with fixed routes in addition to a Dial-A-Ride taxi service. Cedar City International Airport (CDC) provides passenger services around the area. The majority of area hotels and lodging options are located near the junction of Highway 56 and Interstate 15, also called Veterans' Memorial Highway.
Prehistoric people thrived in the area 1,000 AD onward and were ancestors of the present day Paiute Native Americans. Though visited by explorers and fur traders, Mormons established the first settlement and an iron works facility in 1851. The city was incorporated in 1868. Cedar City’s climate benefits from its proximity to both the mountains, which brings cooler temperatures, and the dry air of the desert.
