One of the largest cities in Australia, Melbourne is the country's cultural capital. Home to the Melbourne International Film Festival and the National Sports Museum, Melbourne is a cosmopolitan destination with friendly locals and a rich history.
Visitors from overseas will arrive at Melbourne Airport (MEL), which is situated northwest of the city. Avalon Airport (AVV) serves domestic flights and is a bit farther from the center of town. You have several options for getting into the city, including the Skybus and regular city buses. You can also get to the city by train via the Great Southern Railway and CountryLink or by ship from Devonport in Tasmania. Public Transport Victoria operates an extensive public transit network that can get you anywhere you need to go within the city, and a free City Circle tram will take you around the central business district.
While many cities have a neighborhood that is home to most of the nightlife venues, Melbourne is just the opposite. The best bars and clubs are located down alleyways and are often unmarked or have very little signage. If you are in Melbourne in March, be sure to check out the Formula One World Championship opening race. The event includes live music, air displays and V8 supercar shows.
