We had already booked an expensive, deluxe category room so passed on this 'offer' and our room--which overlooked Hyde Park was lovely and roomy... but this upselling at the front desk put a damper on our stay. Subsequently, I heard the same woman and also a man at check in, try upselling rooms to other tired travelers. They were very aggressive. Do they make a commission on upselling? This is an unethical and unacceptable practice. When we checked out, another front desk attendant said there was a GBP30 per night fee on our bill but it was not mandatory. Could you please remove it, I asked. Certainly, she said...and we'll see if she did. We have no idea what that "mandatory fee" was for."
