United Airlines' main hub, Dulles International Airport (IAD) is a common connecting point for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and travelers hopping along the East Coast or taking the leap across the Atlantic. Whether it's killing time at Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum or getting your hands dirty at Frying Pan Park's idyllic farm, there's plenty for you to do around Dulles.
Dulles is snug against Virginia's Route 28. Sterling to the north features shopping at Reston Town Center, while Chantilly in the south is home to the Dulles Expo Center. A 20-minute drive up nearby 495–N will take you to the DC–Metropolitan Area where there’s plenty of fun to be had.
Visitors looking to kill time between flights should also check out the Air and Space Museum, which is just a few minutes' drive from the main terminal. There, you can grab a bite to eat, catch an IMAX show or ogle a retired stealth fighter jet.
Flying between Los Angeles and Dulles takes about five hours. Be prepared to take a shuttle from your gate to the main terminal. Dulles is a two-level airport, and both baggage claim and rental car counters are on the lower level. If you need to catch a United connecting flight, you'll find most of their gates in Concourses C and D.
