While there is public transportation in Washington, D.C., visitors may want to rent a car in order to avoid waiting around for a ride. After renting a car from the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), head to the National Mall, which is a great place to start your trip. Located downtown, this park has many paths to stroll along, and shaded benches where you can relax and enjoy a snack under the cherry blossom trees.
Although there are not any interstates running through the downtown area, I-395 and I-695 will allow you to access each of the major roads within the city. Interstates I-95 and I-495 create an outer perimeter circle for the city and immediate suburban areas.
If you make advance arrangements, you can visit the iconic White House. Another place you can visit is the U.S. Capitol Building.
On the National Mall, you can visit the Lincoln Memorial. Housed inside this historic Greek revival building is a sculpture of America's 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, and the transcripts of two of his famous speeches. It first opened to the public in 1922.
Your flight from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to Washington, D.C. should take around two and a half hours. Reagan National is located across the Potomac River in Arlington, Virginia, so hop on I-395 to reach the nation's capital.
