Reykjavik, Iceland, holds the distinction of being located farther north than any other capital city in the world. It is Iceland's economic and cultural center. Visitors to Reykjavik will find a visually appealing city noted for its colorful rooftops. One of the first things visitors will notice in the city is the impressive Hallgrimskirkja church, and its tower is visible from all parts of the city. Visitors can ascend to the top of the church's tower for spectacular views of the city. The National Museum of Iceland provides interesting information about Iceland's past. The Volcano House features displays about the volcanic origins of the nation, and the Reykjavik Art Museum is a world-class art gallery.
Reykjavik is served by two airports. Reykjavik Airport (RKV) is used for domestic flights and for flights to Greenland. International passengers will use the Keflavik Airport (KEF), which is nearby. Traveling by car is easy in Reykjavik. Highway 49 is a convenient east and west route while Highways 40 and 41 are good north and south routes.
Many shops, bars and restaurants are located along and within a couple of blocks of Laugavegur Street. The Iceland Airwaves Festival is a music event held each fall that features many new and established bands from around Europe.
