Situated just 25 miles east of Oakland, California, the community of Pleasanton gained recognition for being named one of the country's "Top Hometown Spots" by Forbes. Many travelers to the area enjoy boating, fishing and swimming at Shadow Cliffs Regional Park. For those looking for a beautiful place to golf, the Fairway Golf Course offers a golfer's paradise. For indoor activities, you can visit the Museum on Main Street, which features exhibits exploring local history, or the Firehouse Arts Center that has an art gallery and offers live performances that vary from dramatic presentations to comedy nights.
Major roadways in and around Pleasanton include I-580 and I-680, which evolved from ancient Native American crossroads. The Bay Area Rapid Transit train system and the WHEELS bus transit system provide transportation around and outside of the city.
Pleasanton began as a settlement called Alisal, and its colorful history involves the days of the Gold Rush. John W. Kottinger established the community that was named for Major General Alfred Pleasonton, although a typographical error led to the current spelling. Visitors encounter a semi-arid climate producing hot summers and warm winters. From May through September, the town hosts a variety of events that include open-air concerts in community parks and an annual fair.
