Encinitas is a coastal beach city located in San Diego County, California. As a beach community, Encinitas is known for its surfing and water sports. Swami's Beach, which is located off of Highway 101, is one of the most popular destinations for winter surfing in the United States. Moonlight State Beach is known for its body surfing and its winter sunsets. Encinitas is also close to major attractions such as Legoland, which is less than 10 miles away, and San Diego, about 25 miles away.
The hotels near Moonlight Beach are popular places for travelers to stay. The downtown area is over 100 years old and is filled with historical buildings and plenty of places to shop and eat. D Street is the entrance point to the Boneyards, which is the mile of beach that connects south Moonlight Beach to Swami's Point.
There is more to Encinitas than its long stretch of beach. Classic Car Night is every third Thursday starting in June through September. There is a fall festival every year, as well as the April Street Fair in the spring. Also, 40 percent of all American migrating birds pass through the San Elijo Lagoon. Winter highs in the area are normally in the 50s.
