About Kansas Jayhawks
Representing the University of Kansas, the Jayhawks compete within the Big 12 Conference as Division I athletes. They have won a total of 11 National Championships and over 169 conference championships, 24 of which have been since they joined the Big 12 Conference. Big 12 Staple
No matter what the sport is the Jayhawks dominate. Men’s basketball capturing the most attention with the amount of success the program has received in its history. From the start the program was destined to succeed with their very first coach being the inventor of the game itself, James Naismith. Winning three National Championship games since its beginning, the program has produced some of the greatest basketball players to ever grace the game. Including Wilt Chamberlain as well as Clyde Lovellette, who both played for the National Basketball Association. Other notable teams within Jayhawks athletics include men’s cross country, indoor track and field, as well as outdoor track and field. Several of the athletes that have gone through these programs have gone on to play in the NFL, MLB, and NBA.
Rivals
The major rival of the Jayhawks are the Kansas State Wildcats. The two face-off every year in the Sunflower Showdown, which comprises of both football and basketball games. Some less heated rivalries include with the Missouri Tigers as well as the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Both are the result of the two teams meeting in the post season, as they are in different conferences so regular season face offs are rare.
