Founded originally as the Basketball Association of America in 1946, the league has a rich history of success. In 1949 they changed their name to the National Basketball Association after a merger with the former National Basketball League, increasing their total number of teams by six. Continuing throughout the years, they added teams at a consistent rate with the most recent one added back in 2002. Today the NBA has a total of 30 teams playing under its name, 29 located in the United States and one located in Canada.

2019-2020 NBA Season

After suspending the 2019-2020 NBA regular season in March 2020, the league announced that play would resume in July of 2020. Determined to finish off their regular season, the league wrapped up the season with a series of eight games that will include 22 different teams and a play-in series that determined eligibility for the playoffs. The tip off for the restart happened on July 31, 2020 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney Resort in Orlando, Florida. All games were held without spectators in attendance for the safety of the players and coaches.

With the new proposed plan, the NBA Finals were held in the first couple of weeks in October of 2020. The league confirmed pushing back the start date of the 2020-2021 regular season as a result of the 2020 resumption of play. The start date of the next season was determined to be December 22, 2020, rather than the usual October season start.

NBA Playoffs 2021

After the NBA regular season, 20 teams remained for the 2021 NBA Playoffs. The first round was a play-in tournament to whittle down the list of NBA teams to 16. After that round, there were eight matchups that each played a seven-game series to see which team would move onto the next round.
