History
The Iowa State Cyclones are based out of Ames, Iowa where they are members of the Big 12 Conference, competing under the NCAA Division I. The Cyclones athletics date back to the late 1800’s, with their name dating back to 1895 the year that Iowa was plagued with a record high of cyclones. After their football team had dominated Northwestern University a journalist was quoted in a published article referring to the victory as though a cyclone had struck the other team, from there the nickname became synonymous with the university. The Cyclones play twelve sports with sixteen varsity teams, six men’s teams and 10 women’s teams.
Teams
The Cyclones participate in only six male teams; basketball, cross country, football, golf, track & field, and wrestling. The lady Cyclones play basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. Throughout their history the Cyclones have only won a total of 20 National Championships across five different teams. Also, they have won well over 120 Conference Championships.
Rivalries
The Iowa State Cyclones have three major rivals. One with the Iowa Hawkeyes, one with the Kansas State Wildcats, and one with the Missouri Tigers. Their rivalry with the Hawkeyes is perhaps their largest rivalry as it expands well beyond just one sport. Every year the two have a series called the Cy-Hawk Series; which eleven sports teams battle it out throughout the year, with the winning team getting a specified number of points dependent on the sport. At the end of the athletic season the totals are added up and whoever has the higher total is crowned the winner, other factors in the overall score include academic performance of the athletes. The Cyclones currently lead the series with an all-time score of 7-6. The rivalries with the Wildcats and Tigers are both centered around football, with the matchups between the two commonly referred to as Farmageddon and the Telephone Trophy.
Legacy
With a world class organization such as the Cyclones, there is no doubt that the athletes stemming from there would move on to do great things. Many of the men and women that once represented the Iowa State University Cyclones went on to play and compete professionally in the MLB, NFL, NBA, as well as the Olympics.
