About 3.5 hours north of New York City, the town of Lake George is set amid the Adirondack Mountains. Often called the Queen of American Lakes, the area offers much to travelers. Historic Warren County has museums and winter sports that include ice fishing, skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and downhill skiing and boarding. Romantic lodges, bed-and-breakfast inns and charming hotels make this ideal for those who want to leave the city behind; it could be an ideal setting for a romantic honeymoon as well. Many places in the area offer stunning views, including Cooper Cave Overlook, which inspired writer James Fenimore Cooper.
Glens Falls, to the south, is the site of the Hyde Collection Art Museum. You'll want to visit the interesting Warren County Fish Hatchery, located northwest of Lake George if you like biology. Winter Carnival takes place in town annually in February, and summer offers fireworks, days at the beach, fishing, white water rafting and tubing. Due to the spread of the attractions in the area, renting a car is the easiest way to get around. Most visitors fly into Albany International Airport (ALB) and then make the hour-long drive to Lake George.
In this city, you'll be near family theme parks, such as Six Flags Great Escape. Ausable Chasm and Natural Stone Bridge and Caves Park add wonder, awe and fun. If you go in winter, expect average temperatures of 20 degrees while summer visitors can expect average temperatures of 70 degrees.
