History

The original San Diego Padres team was not a member of Major League Baseball. They were founded in 1936 as a minor league team and were named after the Spanish friars who founded San Diego. The young team was headlined by future MLB Hall-of-Famer Ted Williams, who helped them win their first minor league title in 1937. In 1969 the Padres were invited to join the MLB alongside three other expansion teams, present day Washington Nationals, Kansas City Royals, and the Milwaukee Brewers. For the first six seasons in the National League, they finished in last place. Continuing to grow, they won the National League West title five times and appeared in two World Series, although they failed to secure the title both times.

Military Appreciation

The San Diego Padres are very supportive of the United States military, especially considering the many military bases in the San Diego area. In 1996 they became the first professional sports team to host a military appreciation event. Four seasons later in 2000 they adopted a camouflage uniform on that is worn for Sunday games as well as Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.

PETCO Park

Prior to the 2004 season the Padres played their home games in the multi-purpose stadium San Diego Stadium. It is the current home to the San Diego State Aztecs football team and the former home to the San Diego Chargers, known now as the Los Angeles Chargers. Now the Padres play their home games at Petco Park which is located in the downtown area of San Diego. The ball park hosts concerts, soccer, golf and rugby events. The park was designed to bring a retro feel to the fans that visit it, only one of few MLB stadiums to do so. It was also built in a way that restaurants, offices, and other amenities are not located within the seating bowl itself. HD televisions located throughout allow fans to watch the game even while grabbing a bite to eat.
