About San Diego State Aztecs

San Diego State University’s (SDSU) athletic teams are called the San Diego State Aztecs. The school has six men's and thirteen women's sports at the varsity level. The campus is known as the "Montezuma Mesa" because the university sits on a mesa that overlooks Mission Valley. It is located at the intersection of Montezuma Road and College Avenue in San Diego.

The San Diego State Aztecs compete in NCAA Division I sports, their Football team Subdivision is Division I-A, which is the top tier. The football team was slated to move to the Big West conference in 2013 but stayed in the Mountain West Conference. SDSU has had a football team since 1921. Past players have included Marshall Faulk, Willie Buchanon, John Fox, Joe Gibbs and more. SDSU’s football team is 8–9 for post-season bowl games. They first went to a bowl game in 1948 and won their first major-college bowl game in 1969. All of SDSU’s teams primarily play in the Mountain West Conference. However, their women’s water polo team is part of the Golden Coast Conference. They left the Big West Conference in 2013; the men’s soccer team is part of the Pac-12 Conference. SDSU’s women’s rowing team participates in the American Athletic Conference. Several MLB players played baseball at San Diego State, including Mark Grace, Don Shaw, Travis Lee, and Tony Gwynn, who the baseball stadium is named for. Tony Gwynn also coached the baseball team at SDSU until the time of his death. The basketball teams have had success over the years; during the 2010–2011 season, the men's team had a record of 32–2 and won the Conference Tournament during the 2011 NCAA basketball tournament and they earned a 2nd seed in the NCAA Tournament.
