Classic Underdog
Representing the country of Ecuador at international competitions, the Ecuador national soccer team is a part of the Ecuadorian Football Federation. From the beginning the team saw quite their fair share of hardship, not qualifying for a World Cup until 1930 although they ultimately declined the invitation. It was not until 1962 that the team would once again qualify for the match, this time attending but only to be defeated by Argentina in two games. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Ecuador had many star players on their team including Jose Villafuerte, however they were not able to compete against giants Chile and Colombia to dominate South America’s soccer landscape. In the 1998 World Cup qualifiers Ecuador secured some very important wins, which led them to a sixth-place finish. For years Ecuador struggled against other South American teams, failing to qualify for any major tournaments. More recently, the team has made a steady rise to the top now competing as a major competitor within the South American landscape.
International Champions Cup 2019
The International Champions cup is a great way for national teams to get their preseason nerves out, allowing them to compete in friendly international games with opponents they normally would play in the regular season. Unique to many of these teams, the tournament allows for the teams to play on American soil in some of the biggest venues that the country has to offer. In 2019 Ecuador played a total of four games in the United States. In March of 2019 they played the United States, in Orlando and Honduras in Harrison. The team came back to America in the summer playing against Venezuela at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami and Mexico at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
