Located on the northeast corner of Hawaii's Big Island, Waikoloa is one of the most attractive vacation destinations on the Kohala Coast. The city is set in lush green hills, and the sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean from these vistas are stunning. People have described 49 Black Sand Beach as surreal, and others say it is something that you would expect to see on a postcard. When you are done catching rays on the beach, you can see a show at Dolphin Quest or go scuba diving with the team at Waikoloa Coast Divers.
Waikoloa is about an hour and a half away from Hilo International Airport (ITO). Getting there via Saddle Road is a driving experience that will take you by Mauna Loa. Seeing snow in Hawaii may be a surprise to some, and the summit of Mauna Loa has snow for much of the year. Most area hotels are located near the beach just south of Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area.
The city is a bit cooler than others on the Big Island, and the average high temperature is about 75 degrees. February is the coldest month of the year, and August brings the warmest temperatures to Waikoloa. Golfers should play 18 holes at the respected Waikoloa Village Country Club.
