Hints and tips
The area was inhabited by the Cherokee and the Kickapoo peoples when John Polk Campbell arrived. Encountering an ill Kickapoo child, he offered to help. His intervention saved the boy, and Campbell was rewarded with a tract of land in gratitude. He donated 50 acres for town development in 1833. Two years later, the population was 500. The interesting historic events that occurred here include Civil War battles, and a shootout involving Wild Bill Hickok. Springfield was the location in 1926 where officials named the first paved cross-country highway Route 66. The historic community has a humid subtropical climate, with four identifiable seasons.
