When the team first came about, it was originally going to be named the Toronto Huskies. However, this made it difficult coming up with a logo design and mascot that did not resemble the Minnesota Timberwolves. For this reason, the team’s manager and owner decided to hold a contest in order to help decide the name, colors, and logo. During the contest, more than 2,000 people sent in their guesses, after which there were 10 final choices; Grizzlies, Raptors, Scorpions, Dragons, Bobcats, Beavers, Hogs, T-Rex, Terriers, and Tarantulas.
In 1994, the team finally announced that they chose the Raptors, and called their team the Toronto Raptors. That same year, the team’s first General Manager, Isiah Thomas, revealed the team’s logo and colors which are black, silver, red, and purple. They chose Naismith silver as an ode to the inventor of basketball, James Naismith who was a Canadian. To this day, the team’s red mascot, The Raptor, continues to be a fan favorite as he entertains the crowd, dunks baskets, and “roars” at fans.
