The Florida Marlins, now named the Miami Marlins, became a team late in the game in 1993. The team is part of the Major League Baseball's National League in the Eastern Division and they play in Miami, Florida. The Marlins won World Series championships both in 1997 and in 2003.
The Marlins, affectionately called "the fish," were almost named the Florida Flamingos, but the name didn't stick. Atlantic marlins are some of the largest fish found throughout the world, averaging 11 feet. Wayne Huizenga, owner at the time, picked the name "Marlins" because "the marlin is slick, powerful, alert, agile and proud. It's a fierce fighter, and an adversary that tests your mettle. It can shake itself loose just when you think it's in trouble."
Like the unpredictable fish, you never know what the Marlins might do during a game. In 2003, the team was in last place in the Eastern Division of the National League, yet as the wild card, they went on to beat the powerhouse New York Yankees in the 2003 World Series. Expect the unexpected when you go to a Miami Marlins game. Also, many well-known players get their start with the Marlins, and then go on to play for better teams, so you'll get a chance to see them before their fame at a Marlins game.
The main rivals of the Marlins include the New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Washington Nationals and the Atlanta Braves, although they also have rivalries from American League teams including the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays. Since people from all over the country move to South Florida, you're likely to see fans from both teams at the games.
Until 2011, the Marlins shared a stadium with the Miami Dolphins football team. In 2011, the Florida Marlins changed their name to the Miami Marlins and initiated a new logo, color scheme and uniforms to go with it. This year, they opened a brand new stadium in Little Havana, adjacent to downtown Miami. In addition to seeing a game, it's worth buying Miami Marlins baseball tickets for the amenities Marlins Park offers. It includes some of the closest to the field seats in baseball and a retractable roof to protect from the intense sunshine and unpredictable storms associated with South Florida weather. This also prevents rain delays so you can better plan your day at the game.
When you buy Miami Marlins tickets, you can also enjoy the La Playa pool and lounge area, views of the Miami skyline, bars, restaurants and shops. The park also features aquariums behind home plate, the Clevelander Bar and Swimming Pool, Miami-themed artwork and a bobblehead museum. Plus, the stadium is close to other attractions in Miami, so there is a lot to do when you go to the game. It is accessible by train, bus and car.
