A Wild Card Team

Granted to the city of Miami in 1993, the Marlins were originally known as the Florida Marlins. The team was part of the MLB expansion in 1993 alongside the Colorado Rockies. Early on the team was plagued with failure, not having a winning season until 1997. The Marlins shocked the baseball community when they not only had their first winning season, but when they also qualified for the playoffs in the wildcard position. Despite not winning their division championship that year, they made it to their first World Series against the Cleveland Guardians and they won. Coming off the high of a winning season, the team made some questionable moves in trading away their top performing players to free up salary space. The Marlins did not make another playoff appearance until 2003 when they once again qualified under a wildcard. Considered the underdogs once again they pulled off once again another major upset defeating the New York Yankees in six games to earn their second World Series title. Following this win the Marlins were able to hold onto four winning seasons but were unable to qualify for the playoffs again. Despite valiant efforts by the Marlins, they have the least number of winning seasons in the league. In November of 2011 the Marlins changed their name to Miami Marlins, updating their color scheme and logo along the way. Today the Marlins are a team to watch as new owner Derek Jeter works to make them a team worthy of winning.

LoanDepot park (Formerly Marlins Ballpark)

When they first started, they had to share a stadium with the NFL team the Miami Dolphins. After the shared park was criticized by many for the lack of functionality for a baseball team, the city granted the team an opportunity to build their own ballpark. In 2011 when the team became known as the Miami Marlins, they began construction of Marlins Park. Open in time for the 2012 season, Marlins Park, now loanDepot park, is in downtown Miami and is solely used for baseball. Although the stadium is on the smaller side, it makes up for what they lack in size with features. The stadium has a retractable roof, a bobblehead Museum and several replicas of famous artwork throughout. Also located in the stadium is a bar and swimming pool. The Clevelander is a beach themed night club with food, entertainment and a swimming pool that is in left field. It is open on a game by game basis or can be reserved for special events or groups. The Marlins are also known for providing excellent in game entertainment with their “energy squad”, a group of male and female dancers/cheerleaders. The team was the first in the league to offer this kind of entertainment throughout the game and many teams have since followed in their footsteps.
