Five miles south of downtown Las Vegas, McCarran International Airport (LAS) seems more like one of the nearby casinos than an international airport. The terminal has more than 1,400 slot machines to tempt gamblers, while history buffs gravitate to the Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum on Level 2, above baggage claim.
Outside of LAS, and beyond the extravagant resorts and legendary performances in Vegas, the area hosts rodeos and bull riding at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center, as well as rugby tournaments at Sam Boyd Stadium.
A 15- to 30-minute taxi trip to Las Vegas Boulevard, "the Strip," costs less than $20, and fare to downtown adds another $7, while shared shuttle service averages $8.
To visit nearby Hoover Dam or Boulder City, rent a car at the consolidated facility three miles from LAS, and easily accessible by shuttle from the terminal. RTC Transit travels from LAS to the Strip and downtown Vegas in 30 to 45 minutes for $2. Walking to the Strip via Paradise Road and Tropicana Avenue will take you around 45 minutes.
The flight from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to LAS takes at least five hours nonstop. Upon arrival, access complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the terminals, recharge electronics at provided power outlets, and charge your cellphone at a Smarte Carte station.
