Elephanta Island is an island in Mumbai Harbor having the shape of an elephant's head, and on the island are some temple caves hewn from rock that date back to the 9th century. Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a huge virgin forest reserve that is home to one of the best bird-watching areas in the world, with more than 270 species available, as well as numerous other exotic animals like leopards. The Gateway of India is a monument at the entrance to the harbor at Mumbai, and is the first structure visitors to the city will see. The Taj Mahal Palace was built in 1903 and is a very recognizable symbol of India.

The temperature at Mumbai has little fluctuation throughout the year, with monthly averages consistently in the 80s and 90s and peak temperatures frequently rising above 100 degrees. From June to September, there are extremely heavy rains, with rainfall in July and August being almost nonstop. By contrast, from January to April there is almost none.
