Leaping Over Obstacles

Texas Tech launched its first basketball team in 1925, a program that was slow to gain traction but made determined progress. During the 1930s the Red Raiders earned their first marks of success, three BIAA regular season championship titles. The team received its first invite to the NCAA Tournament in 1954, though it wasn't until 1961 that they cracked the Sweet Sixteen. It seemed an invisible threshold for the Red Raiders, until the team struck all the way to the Elite Eight in 2018. The team was seeded #3 in the tournament but fell before the #1 Villanova. Texas Tech's modern success began in 2001 with the hiring of Bobby Knight as the head coach. Knight infused new energy into the program, leading them to several post-season games in both the NCAA Tournament and NIT. Following Knight's retirement, the Red Raiders continued to pull off dramatic upsets, showing that the team has more than enough spirit left to carry it to new heights.
