Started in 1903, the University of Kentucky Wildcats launched one of the most successful college basketball programs of all time. They may not have known it at the time though, struggling in their early years. But when George Buckheit took control of the Wildcats, the raw talent of the team was refined. In 1929 the lineup was dubbed the "Wonder Team" – the first of Kentucky's many notable squads. The Wildcats basketball team leads the pack in the NCAA with the highest number of tournament appearances, including eight NCAA Championship wins. The Wildcats have had dozens of outstanding players on their roster, including sportsmen like Alex Groza, Anthony Davis, Cliff Hagan, and Frank Ramsey. Student athletes of the Wildcats team have gone on to play in the NBA, win Olympic gold medals, and receive coveted spots in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. In 2018,  the Wildcats had an impressive season, finishing in a three-way tie for fourth place overall. They were defeated by Kansas State, the No. 9 seed.
