Foundation

Established on April 10, 1916 as the first governing body of professional golf, the Professional Golfers’ Association of America was created under the premise of elevating the standards and participation of the sport. During the early years of the league, it was decided that there would be an annual tournament which would crown the top golfer for the season. What later became known as the PGA Championship, the winner walks away with the Rodman Wanamaker Trophy, named after the original founder of PGA. Throughout the 1960’s the league began to become more popular among sports enthusiasts thanks to the ongoing broadcasting of PGA events on national television. During a brief dispute over who should get the increased revenues from the new-found popularity, star golfers broke off and created their own association; American Professional Golfers Inc., although it was very short lived. As a result of the rebellion, PGA created a board for existing players to take part in the conversation of how the league should be operated. Today PGA has over 29,000 professional golfers competing under their name, including both men and women.

For golfers to become members of the PGA they must go through extensive courses, either self-taught or through credited universities. Based on where they live, the golfer will then be placed into one of the 14 districts that make up the league. Members of the PGA compete in over 30 tournaments every year including the Ryder Cup, PGA Cup, and the PGA Professional Championship.
