Virginia Tech's basketball program extends back to 1909, the early decades a training ground for the team's future competiveness. In 1973 the Hokies claimed their first national prize, the NIT championship, defeating Notre Dame. In the 1970s and 80s, Virginia Tech made repeated appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Coach Bill C. Foster made the Hokies a force to be reckoned with in the division, again winning the NIT in 1995. However this success failed to open the door to the NCAA Tournament until 2017, their first NCAA Tournament game in ten years. While they lost to No. 9 Wisconsin then, the Hokies came back in 2018, the first time the team has made back-to-back appearances in the tournament.
