History

The Virginia Cavaliers football team got their start in 1886 after several grad students banded together to create the team after being inspired by the likes of Princeton and Yale. Although they were founded in 1886, it was not until 1888 that the team would play their first inter-collegiate game against Johns Hopkins University, a game which they lost 26-0. After a disappointing inaugural season, the Cavaliers came back with a fighting spirit and became a winning team the following season. From 1889 to 1897 the team brought home seven Southern Championship titles, and along the way they encountered their first ever rivalry within the North Carolina Tar Heels. Very early on the Virginia Cavaliers established their dominance among other big-name teams including Princeton and Vanderbilt. The university officially adopted the name of Cavaliers in 1923, just a few short years after becoming a charter member of the Southern Conference. In the 1950’s the team officially joined the NCAA as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Although the team has never brought home a national championship title, they remain one of the most dominant teams in the NCAA. Over the course of their rich history they have won five conference titles, with the most recent one happening in 1995. The Cavaliers also have several alumni playing within the National Football League including for teams such as the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Green Bay Packers, and Seattle Seahawks. Scott Stadium located in Charlottesville, Virginia is where the Cavaliers play all their home games. They play within the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision.

Rivals

The Virginia Cavaliers have four main rivals that they play throughout the season, they are the Florida State Seminoles, Maryland Terrapins, North Carolina Tar Heels, and the Virginia Tech Hokies. While all their rivals get pretty heated on the field, none match to that of the Cavaliers and the Hokies. The two have faced each other head to head since 1895, competing for the Commonwealth Cup every year since 1970. Currently the Hokies have the upper leg in the series against the Cavaliers. No matter what rival they are playing, the Cavaliers are going to pour their heart and soul onto the field!

Throw on your blue and orange and head on down to Scott Stadium today to cheer on the Cavaliers as they battle it out against their toughest competitors! Order your cheap Virginia Cavaliers football tickets today before they are gone!
