History

The contest has been held annually the day before the Major League Baseball All-Star Game since 1985, although the rules have varied and been changed since the contest's inception. The original Home Run Derby followed a two-inning structure where each player would be granted five outs within each inning. After nearly twenty years of this format, the league made the decision to change the format after many years resulted in a tie among players. The new match play style was implemented in 2000, pitting the player with the most homeruns from the first round against the player with the fewest- the second and third place players would also face off. Whoever came out on top of both matches would then face off to determine who the winner would be. Throughout the next decade the format would change several times until the current format was decided upon in 2015. Currently consisting of four players from both the American League and National League, the home run derby participants are selected based on home run percentage and batting average. They then face off head to head with whoever hits more homeruns in the period of four minutes moving on to the next round. Ultimately the last man standing is crowned as the Home Run Derby Champion.

Since its humble beginnings as an un-televised minor event, the MLB Home Run Derby has gone on to become one of the most-watched broadcasts on its home network of ESPN. Crowds flock from all over to see the most powerful players in the MLB compete for home runs and distance measurements, as the longest recorded hits become a thing of legend, despite distance not having a bearing on the outcome of the derby.
