Moving up in the Ranks
Minnesota's soccer culture was established in 2010 with a North American Soccer League team, but Major League Soccer awarded an expansion team to the state and in 2017 the new MLS team played their first game against the Portland Timbers. They were soundly defeated, and the team had to strive hard to shake a discouragingly bad start to their season. But throughout the year, Minnesota United did find their stride. They eventually turned the tide, ending the season ninth in their conference and appearing in the U.S. Open Cup. In 2018 they ended the season in a similar position as the year before but made a stronger showing at the U.S. Open Cup. They earned a spot in the Round of 16, only to be felled by the Houston Dynamo in a close 1-0 match.
