Background
When her time on America’s Got Talent came to an end, Kehlani left her group and for the six months that followed she strayed from doing anything music related to avoid being sued by the group’s management. Times were tough for the artist following this; she spent a few years crashing on couches and being homeless. When she was a senior in high school she moved to Los Angeles with no guardian. In 2013, Nick Cannon, the host of America’s Got Talent who recognized Kehlani’s potential during her run on the show, reached out to her about joining a rap group. Kehlani tested it out but ultimately decided it was not for her. Months following, she released “ANTISUMMERLUV,” her first solo track. After hearing this, Cannon called her once again and set her up with an apartment and studio time in L.A.
Breakthrough
With the studio time came the release of the singers first mixtape, Cloud 19. The album was ranked at the 28th spot on Complex’s list of the “50 Best Albums of 2014.” The following year, Kehlani opened for rapper G-Eazy on his From the Bay to the Universe Tour.
In 2015 Billboard called her second mixtape, You Should Be Here, the “year’s first great R&B album.” The album hit spot five on the US Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Her tour that followed supporting the album sold out on every North American date.
In 2016 Kehlani was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Urban Contemporary Album for You Should Be Here. In 2016 she also collaborated with artist Zayn on the song “Wrong.” Her debut album, SweetSexySavage, released in 2017. That same year Eminem asked Kehlani to collaborate on the song “Nowhere Fast” from his album Revival.
Kehlani was an opening act for Demi Lovato’s Tell Me You Love Me World Tour in North America in 2018 followed by Halsey’s Hopeless Fountain Kingdom World Tour. Kehlani was also featured in the song “Ring” for Cardi B which was number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 2019, Kehlani’s third commercial mixtape was released. While We Wait reached spot nine on the US Billboard 200.
