Growth Throughout the Decades

Iowa State's basketball program got its start in the early 1900s, steadily climbing up the ladder of college football until the 1930s and 40s. Following his resignation, the Cyclones struggled. However, hope sparked renewed with the hiring of Johnny Orr. In 1984 the team played in the National Invitation Tournament, and the following year they made their second appearance in the NCAA Tournament. 1986 was an even more exciting year, marking the team's evolution as they progressed all the way to the Sweet Sixteen. Orr retired in 1994, but he laid the foundation for the team's current power. In 1996 the Cyclones won the conference tournament championship, and in 2000 they advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. They are a current threat in the Big 12 conference, winning the tournament championship title again in 2014, 2015, and 2017.
