Ohio's New Crown Jewel
With a new round of expansion teams on the table, ten cities were eagerly eyeing the four available slots in MLS. Cincinnati did its best to court favor with the league, and Commissioner Don Garber was swayed by what he saw in the city and the fan culture. In 2018 Cincinnati was awarded an expansion team, and plans were quickly set into motion to make the best debut possible. The team began drafting players both from the United States and around the world. Even before that first game-starting whistle, one thing was certain – Cincinnati's long-standing rivalry with Columbus would continue. Animosity between the two Ohio cities strengthened in 2017 when the Columbus Crew met the Cincinnati FC, then part of the United Soccer League, in the U.S. Open Cup. Even though they were part of a lower league, Cincinnati FC upset Columbus. With both teams in MLS, the stakes of Cincinnati FC-Columbus Crew games have been raised.
