Animosity between the two Ohio cities strengthened in 2017 when the Columbus Crew met the Cincinnati FC, then part of the United Soccer League, in the U.S. Open Cup. Even though they were part of a lower league, Cincinnati FC upset Columbus. With both teams in MLS, the stakes of Cincinnati FC-Columbus Crew games have been raised.
