History

The Boston College football team has perhaps one of the richest history’s in all collegiate sports. The team got their start in 1892 after a group of two students requested that the university create a varsity football team. Boston College played their first game against the St. John’s Literary Institute of Cambridge-a game which they won 4-0. In 1920 the team adapted the nickname the “Eagles”, which eventually adapted into the team’s mascot and identity. One of the most successful seasons for the Eagles came in 1940 when they had an undefeated record for the entire season. Some of the most notable moments from that season included a game against Georgetown at Fenway Park, which the victory at this game led the team to the 1940 Sugar Bowl against Tennessee. Boston College recognizes the conclusion of the 1940 season as their first and only National Championship, and many in the college football niche agree that their undefeated record was enough to crown them. However, the NCAA does not recognize the team as the winners of the 1940 season, instead they list the University of Minnesota as the champions.

From the 1940’s through the early 2000’s the Eagles had their fair share of up and downs with their performance. Throughout that 60 year span the team saw several coaching changes as well as their share of star players coming and going through the program. In 2004 Boston College won their first conference championship against the North Carolina Tar Heels. From 2005-2008 the Eagles appeared in the division championship games three times, becoming co-champions in 2005 and 2008 based on technicalities. Over their course of their history, the Eagles have also appeared in over two dozen bowl games including the Sugar Bowl and the First Responders Bowl.

Today the Boston Eagles Football team plays all their home games in Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, located just outside of downtown Boston. They play within the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference within the NCAA as members of the Football Bowl Subdivision. They are often ranked among one of the best college football programs within the New England area, with many of their players not only in excellent academic standing but also putting on star performances on the field. Throughout the history of the program, many of the alumni have gone on to play in the National Football League (NFL) in teams such as the Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints, and Green Bay Packers.

Rivals

While Boston College plays numerous teams throughout the NCAA football season, there are five main teams that the Eagles go head to head with every season, making any game between them an interesting one! Virginia Tech, Clemson, UMass, Notre Dame, and Syracuse all historically have had rivals with Boston College, some even dating back to the late 1800’s. Boston College currently only leads UMass with the number of victories in their rival series, falling just short of all their other rivals.
