About New England Patriots vs. Baltimore Ravens

The rivalry between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots isn’t a traditional one. This is a rivalry built on events that have taken place on the field between these two famous teams over the last decade or so. The relationship between the team’s fans has soured and things do not look like they'll be getting better in the near future.

The flashpoint came in December 2007 in one of the most memorable games of the last ten years. Things just haven’t been the same between the Ravens and the Patriots since.

The moments that define the rivalry

The Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots are not members of the same division but they have crossed paths frequently over the last decade. The two sides have played some pretty incredible games over the years and here are two of those.

The game that started it all- On December 3, 2007, the New England Patriots made their way to the M&T Bank Stadium to take on the Baltimore Ravens. The Pats went into the game 11-0 and there were whispers of them going the entire season unbeaten. The Ravens were 4-7 and had nothing but pride to play for. That game became the starting point of the Ravens-Patriots rivalry.

The Ravens were 24-20 up at the end of the fourth quarter and there were only two minutes of play left. Rex Ryan, the defensive coordinator for the Ravens’ called for a timeout just before the Patriots’ snap. That negated a stop that would have won the game. The Pats were on fourth-and-1 on the next play but were stopped due to a false start penalty. Brady, at the third time of asking, passed to Jabar Gaffney who completed an 8 yard touchdown with only 44 seconds remaining. Emotions boiled over and in the midst of it all, the Patriots kept their cool to score the touchdown that won them the game 27-24.

The Revenge- The Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots collided in the 2011 AFC Championship encounter at Gillette Stadium. The Pats won the clash 20-23. As fate would have it, the Pats and the Ravens were pitted against each other once again in the AFC Championship game next year.

On January 20, 2013, the Baltimore Ravens once again stepped out on the field at Gillette Stadium to face the might of the New England Patriots. The Pats began the game well and raced to a 10-7 lead by halftime. The next two quarters, however, saw the Ravens mount a stunning comeback and score twenty one points as opposed to the Pats’ zero. The Ravens won the encounter 28-13 and then proceeded to beat the 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the second time in their history.

The Ravens-Patriots go head to head

The Baltimore Ravens played against the New England Patriots for the first time on October 6, 1996. This is how the Ravens have fared against the Pats since then.

The Ravens and the Patriots have also squared off four times in the postseason, and that head-to- head record stands at two wins apiece for both sides.

The Ravens and Patriots Legends

Arguably the greatest Baltimore Raven of all time is Ray Lewis. He is a two time Super Bowl winner with the Baltimore Ravens and became the second linebacker of all time to be awarded the Super Bowl MVP in the year 2000. He also happens to be the first linebacker of a winning side to win the accolade.

Jonathan Ogden is the first player to spend his entire career in Baltimore to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is also a Super Bowl Champion. Ed Reed was a member of the Baltimore Ravens roster between 2003 and 2012, and during that time he won a Super Bowl, became a three time NFL interceptions leader, and made it to nine Pro Bowls.

The New England Patriots have won five Super Bowls since 2001. It is no coincidence that their dominance of the NFL began with the appointment of head coach Bill Belichick and the arrival of QB Tom Brady in 2000.

This does not mean that they have done this all on their own. Players like Rob Gronkowski, who joined the franchise in 2010 and has won two Super Bowls, played a big part in this success, too. If the modern day legacy of the Pats began in 2001, then there were stars like Andre Tippett who put the Pats on the map as a team to be taken seriously. Tippett spent his entire career with the Patriots and became a five time Pro Bowler during that time.
