The tropical climate of the Yucatan Peninsula means that the temperatures in Riviera Maya are excellent all year round; however, between December and April the dry season brings slightly cooler temperatures than in the height of summer. Early fall is the wet season, although it still receives a good amount of beautiful sunshine, so this is when crowds thin out and the hotels and flights are available at cheaper rates. Akumal

Mercados

You'll find markets everywhere on your Riviera Maya travels. Some of the best include Cancun's Mercado 28, where you can pick up plenty of silver jewelry and cheap nosh. The Organic Farmers Market, held every Saturday in Tulum, offers everything from organic honey and pumpkins to a massive array of herbs and spices.

Playa del Carmen

If beaches and bargain-shopping are high on your list for a complete Riviera Maya travel experience, Playa del Carmen in the place for you. For the former, you can take your pick between Main Beach, Coco Beach and Mamitas Beach. For the latter, Quinta Avenida is chockablock with boutique stores and souvenir stalls, plus an endless line of traditional Mexican eateries.
