The Milwaukee Bucks are a spirited franchise with a thirst for an NBA championship. Thus far this goal has eluded them, but they won a league title very early in their tenure in Milwaukee, much to the delight of their fans. This happened in 1971, less than 3 years after the team took root in Milwaukee. They have also won 2 conference titles in 1971 and 1974, as well as 13 division titles thus far in the years following.
Notable players in the Bucks franchise history have included: Kareem Abdul Jabbar (Lew Alcindor), Oscar Robertson, Junior Bridgeman, Bob Lanier, Andrew Bogut, Ray Allen, Michael Redd and Jon Mc Glocklin.
The franchise history of the Milwaukee Bucks is dotted with highlights and bright spots throughout. Although their first season in the NBA was a struggle, it set the stage for an incredible season the next year. This was due in no small part due to the contributions of then-rookie Lew Alcindor, later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. In their second season the Bucks finished with a 56 and 26 record and eventually defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in five games in the Eastern semi finals. Not surprisingly, Abdul-Jabbar was a runaway pick for the NBA Rookie of the Year.
The Don Nelson era from 1976–1987 brought some moderate success, but between 1990 and 1998 was a rebuilding phase. Then from 1998 to 2003 came the George Karl era.
In 1998, acclaimed coach George Karl and GM Ernie Grunfeld came aboard. This new leadership infusion combined with the addition of marquee players Tim Thomas, Sam Cassell and Glenn Robinson really turned things around for the team. Their successful resurgence peaked in the 2000–2001 season, when they won 52 games and clinched the Central Division title. They were stopped in the 2001 Eastern Conference Finals, in which they lost to the Philadelphia 76ers in seven games.
The current incarnation of the Milwaukee Bucks is as hungry as ever for a playoff berth and an ever-elusive NBA Championship.
