When you’re traveling to Oakland International Airport (OAK) it’s best to use Highway 880, north or south to get to the airport. By exiting at 98th Avenue, you will be taken right to the terminals.
The flight from OAK to Kona International Airport (KOA) is around five hours long. Once you arrive, you are about seven miles from Kailua and you can take a taxi, a shuttle or rent a car to get there. The bus service from the airport to Kailua is very limited so consider making other arrangements.
Once in Kailua, check out Kailua Beach Park. The beach is made up of more sand and less rocks than other parts of the island. You can also find shade in the afternoon after picking up lunch at the Kalapawai Market.
If you are into a hiking challenge, head out to Lanikai Pillboxes. If you make it to the top, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views. After your hike, it’s time to do some shopping, enjoy the Kailua Farmers Market, complete with a variety of foods and souvenirs.
It is warm year-round in Kailua so be sure to pack shorts. The coldest month is usually February with temperatures averaging in the mid-70s. In August, which is considered to be the warmest month, temps usually average in the low 80s.
