The Al Hirschfeld Theatre was designed by G. Albert Lansburgh for vaudeville advocate Martin Beck. As such, the theatre was originally named the Martin Beck Theatre. In 1965, the theater was sold to Jujamcyn Theatres from the Beck family. On June 21, 2003 the theatre was renamed the Al Hirschfeld Theatre to honor the famous caricaturist who drew comics of Broadway stars. It was a tribute to him on Hirschfeld's one hundredth birthday. Although he passed away before the grand reopening, Hirschfeld was aware he would be receiving the honor. On November 23, 2003 the Al Hirschfeld Theatre was reopened playing the musical "Wonderful Town." With 1,424 seats, the playhouse was designed to be one of the biggest and most luxurious theatres. Some of your favorite musicals have since been performed on that stage including The Sound of Music, Hair and Guys and Dolls.
The theatre is located in midtown Manhattan on 302 West 45th Street. It was designed with a Byzantine-style with lots of stained glass, iron, grooved columns and curved balconies.
