On June 21, 2003 the theatre was renamed the Al Hirschfeld Theatre to honor the famous caricaturist who drew comics of Broadway stars. It was a tribute to him on Hirschfeld's one hundredth birthday. Although he passed away before the grand reopening, Hirschfeld was aware he would be receiving the honor. On November 23, 2003 the Al Hirschfeld Theatre was reopened playing the musical "Wonderful Town." With 1,424 seats, the playhouse was designed to be one of the biggest and most luxurious theatres.
