Making Moves Towards the Top
The University of Tennessee's basketball program began to really take off in the 1960s with the hiring of Coach Ray Mears. The team became one of the strongest in the conference, often needling their rival Kentucky. The Vols made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1967, advancing all the way to the Sweet Sixteen. The 1970s were bright with the talent of Ernie Grunfeld and Bernard King. The "Ernie and Bernie Show" brought the team many accolades, and the duo even shared the SEC Co-Player of the Year award in 1977. In the early 2000s, the Vols became a constant contender in the NCAA Tournament, going all the way to the Elite Eight in 2010. With the hiring of Coach Rick Barnes in 2015, there has been a resurgence of hope in the Vols basketball program. Barnes quickly brought out the best in his players, and the team even snagged part of the 2018 conference regular season championship.
Buzz around this team is picking up as Barnes leads them towards new territory. Be a loyal citizen of "Big Orange Country" by getting your cheap Tennessee Vols basketball tickets here!
