Stretching for the Top

North Carolina State's basketball program got off to a stellar start when the first team took to the court in 1974. With a winning debut season and a spot in the National Women's Invitational Tournament quarterfinals in 1976, it was clear that the Wolfpack was out to dominate. Throughout the 1980s the Wolfpack was ferocious in the NCAA Tournament, though they struggled to move beyond the Sweet Sixteen. That all seemed ready to change in 1998, when NC State upset the No. 1-seeded Old Dominion by a two-point margin to move on to the Elite Eight. A strong victory over Connecticut gave the Wolfpack a spot in the Final Four. Hopes were high to see the team progress even further, but the Wolfpack was stopped by Louisiana Tech. Still, NC State continued to see success under the leadership of Coach Kay Yow, who led the team to nearly 700 victories and 30 winning seasons throughout her tenure from 1975 to 2009.
