Tearing up the Competition

North Carolina State's first game in 1911 was a crushing loss against Wake Forest, but the team bounced back quickly, defeating Wake Forest in a rematch just a few days later. The team rose to prominence in the 1940s and 50s, with six Southern Conference titles in a row. The Wolfpack also made its NCAA Tournament debut in 1950, advancing all the way to the Final Four. It would be almost twenty-five years, though, before NC State would repeat – and then exceed – this precedent. In 1974 the team rebounded from sanctions imposed for recruiting violations, clinching the NCAA Championship title. The Wolfpack intensified the drama almost a decade later in the 1983 NCAA Tournament. The NC State was dubbed The Cardiac Pack in reference to their tight wins as they advanced through the tournament. Facing down the higher seeded Houston Cougars, the Wolfpack managed to pull out a stunning upset with a buzzer-beating air ball by Dereck Whittenburg, dunked by Lorenzo Charles, to win the title.
